Athletics Report 2016

The pre-season  started at the end of 2015 with certain Struisie athletes participating in three athletics meets in Mossel Bay, Bredasdorp and Moorreesburg.

The 2016 season began in all earnest on 26 January with our annual Colour Athletics.  Congratulations to the Red Team who won both the athletics and the spirit cup.  The following athletes received awards following this competition: Anria Jordaan (Senior Victrix Ludorum), Tiaan Fourie (Senior Victor Ludorum), Christo van Deventer (Junior Victor Ludorum) and Elmé Botha (Junior Victrix Ludorum).

The annual HartLOOP competition was held on 11 February and saw the Struisies, Gimmies, Kwaggas and Point High competing against one another for the second time.  It was an excellent competition and our athletes as well as sing-song group did us proud.  Congratulations to Elmé Botha who won the trophy for the best u/15 girls athlete.

82 athletes were selected to represent the school at the Oudtshoorn High Schools athletics meet.  Our athletes achieved 36 first, 38 second and 23 third positions during this competition.  On Saturday 7 March, 38 of our athletes represented the Oudtshoorn District at the SWD championships.  Our athletes yet again performed very well and seven Struisies were selected for the SWD team: Elmé Botha, Cecilia Strydom, Ezio Pietersen, Lyle Metembo, Thomas Jordan, Mhlali Dani, Gabbi Pheiffer and Francois Henning.

Elmé performed exceptionally well at the SA Championships and was placed fourth in shot put and discus.

Congratulations to all the athletes and their coaches on the successes achieved during 2016.  We also thank the coaches and officials for all their hard work and dedication; it is sincerely appreciated.
