Simboliek van skoolwapen / Symbolism of badge

Our school badge originated in the family crest of Baron Pieter van Reede van Oudtshoorn, an aristocrat of the latter half of the 18th century and appointed governor of the Cape.  Unfortunately, he died before taking up office.

Honest hard labour leads to great heights / success.

Our school badge is, therefore, between four and five centuries old.  It is a cherished heritage and, quite possibly, in its original form, the oldest used by any school in the Republic of South Africa.

Skoollied / School Song

Waar berg verrys met kruin omhoog
na die lug daarbo so blou,
staan ons skool waaraan ons trou beloof,
stewig sal ons bou.
Waar kennis en ons vriendskap
deur die jare word versterk,
Aan Hoërskool Oudtshoorn bly ons trou,
naas God en Vaderland.

Where lofty mountains raise their peaks
to a sky of azure blue,
stands a school of which we’re proud to be
scholars staunch and true.
Where minds are shaped and friendships built
and characters are formed
To God and country, to our school,
our trust and loyalty.
