Netball 2016

We had twelve teams this year which regularly practised and played matches.

Here follows an overview of this year’s season which had many memorable moments:

The first netball team
We experienced a relatively good year with many good wins.  Although we had many injuries this year, we still played very well against large schools.

Our team participated in three tournaments: the Porterville tournament, the George Netball Top Tournament and our own K2 Tournament.  We were able to use the tournaments to finalise our team combinations.  We finished 6th overall during the K2 Tournament.  The best results of the season include beating the following teams: Hugenote (34-12), Kimberley High (35-8) and Langenhoven Gimnasium (34-28).

Provincial Players
Seventeen Struisies participated in the SWD netball trials in Riversdale and George.  Two players were selected for the OAKS Western Cape team which participated in the National u/17 tournament held in Cape Town during the June vacation: Anique Wolmarans and Carla van Zyl.  We are very proud of these two girls who have been included in the Top 35 South African training group which will participate in trials later this year where a national u/17 team will be selected to participate in matches overseas next year.  Three Struisies represented the Eden district at the Western Cape Inter-district tournament which was hosted by Oudtshoorn High School: Shannen Samson (u/18), Cayla LeKay (u/18) and Jady Carelse (u/18).  Ms Alida Louw was the u/17 Western Cape Oaks Team coach.

Other achievements
We had two very successful sports days.  We won 6 of the 9 matches played against Langenhoven Gimnasium and 5 of the 12 matches played against Hugenote High School.

The u/15A team performed exceptionally well by repeating last year’s win against the Kwaggas with 18-14 this year.

u/14A netball team
The team did very well this year as they were again crowned the SWD champions.  They beat Point High at the SWD Top Schools Competition and drew against Outeniqua High School.  They were placed first, based on their goal average.  During the Western Cape Top Schools competition held in Stellenbosch, they beat Hermanus High School and lost against only La Rochelle High School and Brackenfell High School by fewer than five goals.

Thank you to each coach and player who contributed towards the success of this year’s netball season.  We appreciate each person’s input on and off the court.
